3rd times the charm .... I hope

This will be the 3rd day in a row I've tried to make a journal entry only to get way down into it only for my laptop to jump to another page and lose my whole entry. So here goes nothing :)

Been busy with doctor apts for myself, sister and the kids plus teacher's meetings and all that stuff. Got to be at the grade school at 7:45 in the morning for Adam's arc meeting.... it's where we all go over the game plan for dealing with his educational needs as well as his development needs. He got his report card today and everything was good except for a couple of behavior problems. My sister had to talk to his teacher today about a fund raising donation they asked for and she asked the teacher about his progress as far as the 1st grade educational requirements as the satisfactory they give doesn't really tell you much. According to her, Adam's already met and surpassed the reading, spelling and math that he would need to learn in the first grade so his knowledge will not be a problem at all.

Sis was able to ask her about the couple of recent behavior problems and it turns out both happened in a reading group in one of the other 1st grade teacher's group *with 4 they mix it up a bit to keep the kids interesed* Turns out the group they put Adam in has a kid in it that has worse problems with behavior than my nephew but his family isn't doing anything about it and this is the same boy that nearly put Adam's eye out in preschool with a stick he hit Adam with in the face missing his eye by 1/4 inch, he still has the scar and may always have it. The behavior problems also involved this other boy.

When my sister informed the teacher of this she told her that she would see about moving Adam to another reading group and see if this handled the problem. Knowing this school system though I doubt they'll acknowledge that's the problem and leave him there.

Good thing he's already ahead of them all in reading because when there's a problem, Adam is the one removed from the class because he has a worker that stays with him and so no teacher has to be bothered with him which isn't the case with the other kid.

I really miss getting together with my friends, poor Rat was sick as a dog with a cold this past weekend and Birdie closed on her new house right after her busiest week of the year so I know she's rushed off her feet and hate to bug her but I so need a girls night out. *pouts*

Halloween is coming up soon but not sure if we're going to do the candy deal this year, didn't have many last year and all the strangers bug Adam so we'll probably just play a lot of halloween movies (kids ones of course) and pig out on pizza and ice cream :)

Hey it looks like this time did work and I got this whole thing wrote so maybe whatever I was screwing up is fixed now. lol It was probably just my typing skills and I know it.

Just a tip. Write your journal entries in notepad first and then post them here. Then even if VR does burp you'll have a backup copy. ;)

weird thoughts of past and future times

I read Requiem's journal about kids driving that never had to rewind a tape with a pencil and while it did make me feel old it also reminded me of some really great times with friends and my sister keeping those tapes playing over and over. But it also got me to thinking about a conversation I had the other day with my niece about taking typing class in school.

She said oh I've already taken keyboarding! I asked her about it since she still cannot actually type with any accuracy or speed and it is nothing like what we had that taught you how to put together a business letter or any proper type written work. They apparently no longer offer anything but keyboarding :(

At least if we lose all electric power as some are predicting I can still use a manual typewriter! lol

It's funny really things we thought were so cool and so much better than what our parents had and now most under 20 don't even know what we're talking about if you say things like manual typewriter or IBM selectric typewriters which rocked. Don't even try to explain a party line telephone to a teenager today they'll just equate it with a conference call!

While I love many things about my cell phone there are times I turn it off or just ignore it. For most of my life the phone didn't rule me and I don't see the need to give it that power now. There's rarely going to be anything there that cannot wait a little while for me to hear. It's supposed to be a convenience not my owner.

Don't get me wrong I love the modern perks of technology and don't want to give up my laptop, cell phone or satellite radio but it also worries me a little that if the worst happened and we had to return to old fashioned survival how many in the western world could actually manage it?

Strangely growing up as I did in the country and quite poor, I remember well family curing our own meats in a smokehouse and raising a huge garden and canning it then storing it in the root cellar where potatoes and nuts were also stored since there wasn't space or power to fridge or freeze these items.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not predicting the end of the world or a return to living without indoor plumbing (god forbid) nor am I stocking up on guns and bows/arrows and digging in for the end of civilization but just thinking about how most younger folks ignore the older generations which is who holds that experience in survival and how that would work out.

It might very well be the end of the world. But at least we are not suggesting that we will survive a nuclear attack by ducking under our desks and having a food storage filled with tang and spam.

Thank you kindly, dear Cat, for making me feel old.

Thank you too dear Meeper, I well remember the duck and cover drills at grade school. They just left out the part we learned as adults (and kiss your butt goodbye) lol

I'm really enjoying reading the quotes found under the Inspiration tab under the Main Menu. I'll admit not to be smart enough to know where the quotes come from but they are still lovely to read and consider.
